21st Century Urban Design Convention “Design of Cities and Environments”
16/11/1989 to 17/11/1989The convention celebrated the 100th birthday of the modern city of Nagoya. Christopher Alexander was invited to give the principal address; on November 16, he delivered a 120-minute speech on “The City of the 21st Century: Its Wholeness and Life – and the Process of its Creation”. At the same time he was invited b city officials to visit a housing site on the edge of the city where there were plans to build 550 units at an overall density of 185 units per ha., and was asked to prepare a proposal for implementation.
