Fall 1967 Environmental Design 190: Transcript of lecture 6
13/10/196711-page lecture transcript, delivered on October 13, 1967. Discusses two possible attitudes to create and re-introduce organic unity and functional adequacy in the environment, which is currently generated by defective pattern language. The first attitude is that pattern languages are archaic and specific to the culture within which they were used, but not usable currently and so they need to be scraped, and find some other ways; and the other attitude is the reintroduction of a pattern language and actually make it work; within this context the notions of cultural memory and abstraction are introduced. Both attitudes are supported by examples.
