Building Process Area of Emphasis: Integrated Design Studio – Development of Santa Cruz & Furniture Making

Fall 1990

Design studio to lay the foundation for a single integrated view of design, building and planning, which extended from the smallest parts of the building fabric to the largest parts of cities. The goal was a complete integrated picture of the crucial ten-block area in downtown Santa Cruz, the area that forms the link between the present downtown (destroyed by the 1989 earthquake) and the boardwalk and pier.
Within the Integrated Design studio, students were encouraged to untertake the design and fabrication of individual furniture pieces in the carpentry shop of the department.
