The Peru Project – Low Cost Housing for the United Nations: Composite bamboo/polyurethane foam beams – Photographs of testing procedure

01/01/1969
Construction Experiment & Mock-up

Sixteen photographs from testing the application of vertical loads on a real-size fabricated composite bamboo beam, for assessing the extent it affected its buckling. .

Photograph:

  • 1) Setting up the testing procedure by hanging the empty barrels on the raised & properly supported beam
  • 2) Barrels are hung, ready to be filled with water
  • 3) Filling in the empty barrels with water
  • 4) Barrels filled with water up to the rim; beam buckling to be measured
  • 5) Added weight on top of the beam shows some buckling
  • 6) Detail of the beam with the empty hung barrels
  • 7) Measuring the buckling against a leveled stretched line of string
  • 8) Focus of the composite bamboo beam, the knot on the robe and the stretched line of string
  • 9) Closer view of the previous image, focusing on the pins marking on the bamboo the horizontal level, before loads were applied
