• Christopher Alexander states in the "Notes on the Synthesis of Form" that the object of design is form, and consequently the problem of design is to fit the form with its context. Form is the part of the world which we have control, and context is the part which puts demands on this form. It is this relationship what he investigated through thorough analysis of requirements to identify fits and misfits between form and context. Furthermore, he based the need for such a research on the observation that traditional, unselfconscious cultures have no design problem to solve, since the form tends to fit to its context through a gradual and piecemeal process, and the goodness of fit between form and context is achieved over a long period of time, and is directly responsive to misfits. On the contrary, the selfconscious design process of western cultures has complex design problems to solve and he embarked into proposing a process that a good fit between form and context could be achieved. .

      The sourse of good fit
The unselfconscious process vs. the selfconscious process
A good design not only fits its context well but also illuminates the problem of what the context is, and thereby clarifies the life it accomodates
