Application of the early ideas of pattern language to the design of an educational research and development facility. The architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Architects (S.O.M.) asked C.E.S. to work with them on the schematic design of the SWRL facility. C.E.S. developed more than hundred patterns after intensive field study, using interviewing and discplined observation; this material was supplemented by information drawn by the C.E.S. pattern library. C.E.S., S.O.M. and SWRL reviewed, criticized and finalized the patterns, which were then furnished to the designers in the architectural firm for use in the schematic development.
